Political Scientist and author Patrick Deneen of the University of Notre Dame talks about his book Why Liberalism Failed with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. By liberalism, Deneen means the modern enterprise–the push for self-actualization free of the constraints of tradition, family, and religion that typifies modern culture. He argues that both the left and the […]

Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded? Of the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism, communism, and liberalism—only the last remains. Why Liberalism Failed provides a bracing antidote to the pieties of left and right by showing how an impoverished, bipartisan conception of liberty has imprisoned the public life it claims to have set free. One could not ask for a timelier or more necessary enrichment of our depleted political discourse."—Jackson Lears, Board of Governors Patrick Deneen’s Why Liberalism Failed was one of the most widely discussed political books last year.In a crowded field of authors addressing the future of liberalism, Deneen stood out like a lightning-rod for his withering, full-frontal attack on the core principles and assumptions of liberal philosophy. Why Liberalism Failed takes up the always necessary, increasingly urgent task of locating the deeper intellectual and cultural traditions that shape our everyday lives."--Fred Bauer, National Review "A timely and radical book."--Samuel Goldman, University Bookman "Why Liberalism Failed is a sobering look at an ideological turning point in Why Liberalism Failed depends on the Master Mistake of modern social science, namely, that we are sorely alienated—Deneen refers to Marx for support and brings out the usual claims of bowling alone and “the depletion of moral self-command and the depletion of natural resources.” But what if the liberal quest to expand our liberty is actually eroding our liberties? That’s the argument Patrick J. Deneen—associate professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame—makes in Why Liberalism Failed, a persuasive contribution to the ongoing political debate in North America.

I have never read this book and have Liberalism has occupied the commanding heights of political philosophy, and—when instantiated as the hegemonic ideology of societal institutions—it becomes the ideology to which there is no alternative. This conquest of the engines of social formation is, as Patrick Deneen argues, why liberalism is failing. So, in Why Liberalism Failed, Deneen points out how liberalism’s triumph over the failed ideology of socialism proved to be its undoing. According to Deneen, socialism leads to lost freedoms , so it fails, but the extravagant individual freedoms and lack of corresponding responsibility caused by liberalism have also led to liberalism’s undoing. Why Liberalism Failed is not the first book of its kind. Nor will it be the last. Demand for works that hail the imminent demise of our society is seemingly insatiable.

Sheri Berman  Why Liberalism Failed by Robert Deneen is one of the most provocative works I have ever read.

The book is very American, and effectively ignores the European Socialist tradition, which provides (an always did), an alternative and coherent ideology to Liberalism, which is why Liberals were always so bitterly opposed to Socialism. And it ends on a rather artificially upbeat note, suggesting that somehow Liberalism is capable off reform.

If we’re all so apparently supportive of its goals, why does Deneen judge that it has failed to deliver on its promises? Because its failures are directly related to its successes—because of liberalism’s emphasis on the autonomous individual caught between state and market, it minimizes and even subverts institutions and associations that are irreducible to the wills of state and individual. Yet before explaining why liberalism failed, he must first show skeptics that it has done so.
